the bare essentials with an editing bear
BEAR Essentials Editing
developmental editing
What to Expect
Developmental editing is also called substantive editing. It focuses on the high-level aspects of the story, like the plot, the character arcs, and the flow of the narrative. It's not about correcting grammar.

This is the first kind of edit your novel will go through, and it will likely need several rounds of revisions before it moves to copyediting. This is the stage where you kill your darlings; you'll throw out whole scenes, plotlines, and characters, and identify where you need to rebuild. (With my help!)

Depending on how long your novel is, it should take 4 to 5 weeks from start to finish. I'll send an editing letter with a copy of your manuscript with my in-text notes.
What Qualifies?
Although I mostly focus on novels for this kind of edit, essays and other long-form writing can benefit from developmental editing. Instead of focusing on character arcs, for example, I'll look instead for the flow of ideas and how well they support your overall argument.
