developmental editing
What to Expect
Developmental editing is also called substantive editing. It focuses on the high-level aspects of the story, like the plot, the character arcs, and the flow of the narrative. It's not about correcting grammar.
This is the first kind of edit your novel will go through, and it will likely need several rounds of revisions before it moves to copyediting. This is the stage where you kill your darlings; you'll throw out whole scenes, plotlines, and characters, and identify where you need to rebuild. (With my help!)
Depending on how long your novel is, it should take 2 to 3 weeks from start to finish. I'll send an editing letter with a copy of your manuscript with my in-text notes.
Sample Edits
Sample edits for developmental editing aren't as straightforward as for copyedits. I will, however, offer samples for up to 5 chapters to give you an idea of what I can bring to your project.
These samples start at $50 but may adjust according to how long those 5 chapters are (word count). The $50 is non-refundable, but it will go towards the price of the full project if you hire me to edit your whole manuscript.
